This is terrible. No, not the recipe for homemade jerky treats but the news that nearly 600 dogs have gone to puppy heaven because they ate jerky treats made in China. We don’t get jerky unless it’s homemade. So here’s the recipe from our two-legged companion.
Thinly slice chicken breast or beef round steak as thin as possible. Put the meat in the freezer first until it starts to freeze, that makes cutting it thinly easier.
Put a pot of water on the stove. Turn on high until the water boils. Put in the slices of chicken or beef. Let it cook for two minutes after the water comes back to a boil.
Take a slice out and cut it in half If the chicken is white not pink it’s okay. The beef should be grey on the outside with no pink on the inside where you cut it. This step kills any nasty bacteria.
Place the slices on a cookie cooling rack and the rack on a cookie sheet. Place in a 250 degree oven for two hours. Turn off the oven and let the chicken or beef sit in there until the oven is completely cool.
If you have a dehydrator use that instead of the oven. Arrange the slices so they’re not touching. Leave on overnight. Check in the morning. Jerky treats should be completely dried out.
Kate, the cute one.
